As we approach the beginning of this historic new school year, the Western Christian School student council has been hard at work! On August 7, 2018 at Broadway Commons, 17 of Western’s student body met for the first ever Western Christian School Student Council meeting! The day was filled with team bonding, planning, praying and dreaming about the upcoming school year!
Student council members kicked off the morning catching up and enjoyed some donuts and drinks before venturing out on a photo scavenger hunt. The goal was for them to work together as a team and listen to the instructions of the photographer. A set of instructions was sent to one group member who was in charge of capturing a photo and sending it in. A new set of instructions was then sent to a different group member until every member was the photographer. Pictures of the group ranged from standing hand in hand in front of a very red Mexican restaurant, showing off their most glamorous Hollywood pose in front of Salem Cinema, to recreating the Beatles crossing and Da Vinci’s Last Supper. It was a great time of bonding and learning to work together as a group!
Next they went over the expectations of the student council and what their responsibilities would look like as leaders of the student body. This is a great group of leaders who truly desire to be the best example to and voice for their peers! The students were then broken up into four groups to pray over the school year and discuss the theme and verse. It was so encouraging seeing the enthusiasm and love for the school this group has. To hear them praying for the students, staff, and direction for the school year was such a blessing. It is a privilege to be a part of such a special group of students!
While there hasn’t been a definite decision on theme and verse for the year, the student’s were really drawn to the idea of “The Next Step”- after last years spring spiritual renewal week, “Recognizing God’s Voice,” led by Kara Brown, the student’s loved the idea of working as a student body to help individual students discover what that next step looks like in their relationship with Christ. Again no final decision was made, but a great concept and great Scripture were thrown into the discussion “blender”, as senior Johnny Williams called it, “to blend these great ideas into a delicious spiritual smoothie.” We are really trusting that God is guiding us in choosing a theme as we honor the past and embrace the new!
Jack Stone, our leader of Student Ministries, voiced his desire to connect with Music Director, Josh Brumfield, and help organize and build a worship team program that continues in the years to come! The heart of this student council is to see their peers actively involved in chapels and small group and to promote a community of godly unity!
The rest of the afternoon was spent in meetings within the four different committees: Spiritual Ministries, led by Jack Stone, Social, led by Hallidae Hunt, Spirit- led by Kelsi Sturdivant, and Fundraising- led by Johnny Williams. It was very exciting to move from group to group and hear their ideas and excitement for the new school year. This will be the first year having an elementary school and already the student council is making plans to involve and unite the student body as a K-12! As we ended the day we prayed for the upcoming year as a whole, the new staff and students, and for God’s blessing on our Student Council.
There is a lot of excitement and energy from this group! It was a wonderful day of work, laughter, fun, and fellowship!Contributed by: Missy Stephenson Bible Teacher & Student Council Adviser
