ART PROGRAMS IN SALEM
The Arts
At Western, the arts play a critical role in the development of our students, helping them to grow in their creativity, expression, and communication skills.
They also offer an opportunity to deepen our students’ faith, helping them to understand and connect with God in new and meaningful ways that are unique to them and their interests.
Worship Arts
Student-led worship arts is a class in which students take on a leadership role in creating and executing worship experiences. This class, guided by our music teachers, provides a unique opportunity for students to use their talents and creativity to praise God and inspire others. It also helps students develop their musical skills while building leadership, teamwork, and communication abilities. By participating in student-led worship arts, students can deepen their faith, gain a sense of purpose, and form a closer connection with the WCS community.
Choir
WCS has a proud tradition of choral singing. We offer multiple levels of choir for middle and high school students. Middle School Choir is an elective for 6th-8th grade students who want to learn more about singing or who already enjoy singing. High School Concert Choir is a fine art elective for 9th-10th grade students who wish to continue their choral singing experience or are new to choir.
Band
Concert Band is available to students from grades 6-12 for beginning and experienced players. Band classes offer students the opportunity to develop musical skills, learn teamwork, and perform for audiences. Additionally, participating in a band class can also help to foster creativity, self-discipline, and a lifelong appreciation for music.
Theater
Theater students learn about various elements of theater, including acting techniques, script analysis, stage production, and design. They have the opportunity to develop their creative abilities, increase their self-confidence, and improve their public speaking skills. Offering students a chance to showcase their skills and express their ideas in a public setting, the theater department holds two productions a year. All students are welcome to audition for each production.
Visual Arts
The WCS Visual Arts program offers students the opportunity to explore and create in various mediums, including drawing, painting, yearbook, calligraphy, photography, and more. Classes are taught by experienced and talented teachers who have a passion for seeing the creativity in students come alive. They provide guidance and instruction in technique, composition, and expression.
Woodshop
For students interested in working with their hands, our woodshop program offers hands-on instruction in the art of woodworking. From building furniture to creating intricate cutting boards, our students learn the skills and techniques they need to turn their visions into reality. Many of these can be seen on display outside the front office.
Auto Shop
For students who are mechanically minded and have a passion for cars and mechanics, our auto shop program offers hands-on instruction in auto maintenance and repair. Students learn how to diagnose and repair problems, as well as how to perform routine maintenance.
